Who Qualifies as a First Responder?

The law defines first responders as police officers, firefighters, emergency medical providers, employees of the Connecticut Department of Corrections, telecommunicators, and healthcare providers. If you fall into one of these categories, you may be eligible to include post-traumatic stress injuries in your workers’ compensation claim.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, the traumatic incident must occur “in the line of duty.” This means any action you’re legally required or authorized to perform as part of your job, including compensated duties or volunteer firefighter tasks as defined by Connecticut law. This specific definition ensures that only relevant incidents are covered.

Qualifying Events

The law identifies specific “qualifying events” that must occur for a claim to be valid. These include:

  • Contact with a deceased minor
  • Witnessing a death
  • Treating a patient who then dies
  • Witnessing a traumatic injury resulting in the loss of a vital body part
  • Events related to COVID-19 deaths or illnesses
